NMDC : JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE

The fundamental statement for mining industry is ‘The new world simply can’t function without mining’. Mineral resources play a vital role in the economic development of the country. Why mining is a way of life? Every single thing we depend on is either made from minerals or depends on minerals for its production. It takes several minerals and mines to produce the cell phones. Mineral products are essential components for automobiles, roads, home appliances, energy towers, solar panels, wind turbines, fertilizers, railways, new buildings and all construction sectors.

The year 1958 heralded a new era. An organization was born, one which would pave the wave for a colossal tomorrow. Through an eventful journey of six decades, NMDC witnessed a growth which very few have seen. As the economic backdrop of our nation changed, India saw the emergence of a leader in the minerals and mining industry. A force to reckon with, NMDC has today carved a niche for itself not only in the way they excel in business, but also in the way they uphold the basic human values and contribute meaningfully to society. Today, NMDC has secured international footprint, a significant step towards becoming a global major.

With iron-ore production of 35.58 million tonnes in financial year 2017-18, it has a market share of about 25 percent domestically (excluding captive iron ore production). Average grade of iron ore of NMDC sold in the market is 64 percent Fe, which is one of the best globally. With a Profit (before tax) of Rs 6179 crore in financial year 2017-18, it is one of top profit-making ‘Navratna’ public sector companies in the country. It has a net worth of Rs 24,354 crore (as on 31st March 2018). It has a strong history of rewarding investors with dividend payment of Rs 14,111 crore in the last five years.

NMDC continues to pursue policies and programmes to deliver long term value to all its stakeholders. NMDC has also invested substantially in the socio-economic development of the local communities, especially near its mining projects. Ranked amongst India’s topmost companies in terms of its robust financials, NMDC’s eco-friendly, scientific and safe mining operations have earned recognition for it not just as one of the world’s lowest cost producer of iron ore, but also as the leader in its category.
