New Delhi Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi will not contest against Narendra Modi as party has fielded Ajay Rai from Varanasi.

Speculation over Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature was started by her statement. She once said that she will be happy if party president Rahul Gandhi allows her to fight against Narendra Modi.  Even on a question whether he will field Priyanka from Varanasi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that he will leave people in suspense as it is not always a bad thing.

Now in coming days Priyanka may campaign for Ajay Rai as well.  Former congress MLA Ajay Rai had contested unsuccessfully against Modi in 2014. He ranked third with over 75,000 votes, behind AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.

A Bhumihar by caste, Ajay Raj wields considerable influence over his community in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Party leaders say he is the best bet for the Congress in the region.
